A PLAN to turn a workshop into housing has been rejected by a council.

Proposals were put forward to turn the building in Ulverston into housing with a single-storey rear extension.

Four parking spaces were also due to be created at the land behind Beehive Cottages in the town.

But planning permission has been refused by South Lakeland District Council.

A decision notice said the plan would 'cause harm'.

It said: "The proposed development consists of backland development to the rear of other houses along the southern side of the road, where there is no residential development at depth.

"The proposal would, therefore, cause harm by introducing a form development contrary to the prevailing form and character.

"Additionally, the disproportionately large garden area proposed would add to the domestication of the countryside and further erode the form and character of the area."
