READERS have reacted to the recent plans to turn a hotel in a South Lakeland village into apartments.

Ian Kelly wants to convert the Fishermans Arms at Baycliff due, say planning documents, to the 'unviable' nature of the current business.

The hotel, which is near Ulverston, currently contains six rooms with en suites, an apartment in which the owners – Mr Kelly and his wife – live, and a restaurant and bar. The plan would see internal alterations made to turn the site into nine apartments.

David Andrew Eley said: "Great shame. Always a go to place when we want to take visitors out for a meal. Ian delivered meals locally during the pandemic lockdowns. A real asset to the local community but it’s a reflection of the economic outlook and I fear for all those in the hotel and leisure sectors."

Gill Jepson said: "So sad! Always a favourite place-had a lovely meal just before Christmas"

Laura Todd said: "Disgusted that it has come to turning all these pubs into accommodation and they can't remain open."

Sue Pickthall said: "If the plans still include a small restaurant and bar as originally planned, the village and visitors will still have a lovely place to visit."
