READERS have paid tribute after the death of Peter Helm, a man who dedicated 30 years to raising and lowering the flag at Dalton Castle.

Mr Helm last raised the flag for Remembrance Sunday and the King's Birthday.

He died on December 15 leaving behind his wife Margaret, his sons Paul, Jonathan and Richard, and their wives and partners.

Alongside his wife Mr Helm was one of the founding members of the Friends of Dalton Castle.

Gary Milne said: “I am sorry that I only knew Peter for a short time, but he showed me the ropes when I became the junior flag raiser. I shall remember Peter every time I raise the flag on top of Dalton Castle in the future.”

Ben Edward Postlethwaite said: “True gentleman I only met him three times he was so nice rip.”
