BARROW MP's has defended the town after it was listed as one of the worst places to live in the UK, according to a satirical website.

iLiveHere, which allows the public post their views on the places they live, has published its annual nominations for England's worst towns and cities for 2023.

Barrow has been included on the shortlist and it is among cities such as Brighton, Cambridge, Leeds and Liverpool.

Simon Fell, the Conservative MP for Barrow and Furness, said: "This is absolute tosh - Barrow is a fantastic place with one of the most amazing communities I have ever been fortunate enough to be part of.

"It is full of passionate, caring people. It is surrounded by the most amazing nature, and has its best days ahead of it. Barrow has grown from nothing to a global centre of advanced manufacturing in just 150 years.

"ILiveHere by comparsion is a website that I doubt will see the decade out."

Readers have also shared their views on what they like about the town and what it has to offer.

Amanda Exley said: "If you think Barrow is one of the worst places to live then clearly you haven't looked beyond your own front doorstep! We don't have any shops, who cares! It's a walk to one of the most beautiful beaches on the west coast and a stones throw from our wonderful Lake District national park. It is struggling as are many other North England towns but I don't believe its anywhere near 'the worst place to live'"

Peter Mogsy Morgan said: "Best town ever. Its all on our doorstep - lakes, sea, mountains, fresh air. If you don't like the town move somewhere else. Simple."

Norma Parker said: "We just need to look around us to see the wonderful area we live in. Sea, wonderful walks and the Lakes within 25 minutes. Why are some people so negative? Look around you!"

Gordon Mcmillan said: "I don’t really care what these 'iLiveHere' numpties say. Barrow is a great place, sand, sea, lakes, mountains and the Kings Arms."

The votes will close on January 31.
