A WOMAN who spends up to six hours of her day picking up litter in and around Barrow has been praised by readers.

'Selfless' Christine Atkinson started litter picking in 2020 with her husband. "I was walking along Abbey Road, top end of Abbey flats and I was appalled how much rubbish was in the edges", she said.

She said that the quantity of rubbish 'blew my mind' and made her take action.

Nondumvetus said: "What a lovely selfless act. But surely this highlights the problem primarily caused by the enormous number of fast food outlets in the area. And a growing number of feckless youths in cars without a shred of social responsibility."

Don't always get it right said: "Think we all need to help I'm sure we will all have an hour or two to spare I certainly will be out there near where I live if everyone went out near their homes think how much better it would be also community service people should be helping."

Trying! said: "Christine you do a fantastic job WELL DONE and appreciated by many We really all should do our bit too as Barrow council couldn't give a toss."

Dawn l'Anson: "See this lady regularly on Park Road in Barrow. Well done!"

Pat Clark said: "Well done. See this lady often clearing up other people’s mess from the roadside."

Laura Jackson said: "She has been out all over Christmas and has done an amazing job, but she shouldn't have to do it, but thanks to her the area looks 100% better, fingers crossed the council picks up her bags!"

Dawn Croasdell said: "Well done what an absolute angel."

Tracy Clarke said: "Thank you Christine. A true Barrow champion."

Graeme Rushton said: "She and others do an amazing job, I've seen them in all weathers on Park Road."

Ian Rainford said: "Well done Christine…plenty of others as well - Peter Forrest, also a man who walks his dog in Hawcoat picking up litter (and discarded dog bags) as he goes. Amazing people, they shouldn’t have to do it but they do because of the bone-idle locals who can’t be bothered taking their litter or dog cr*p home with them."
