LOCAL artists will showcase their artwork exploring themes of identity and mental health.

'People Like Us' will be displayed at Barrow Underground Music Society, 2 Carlisle Street, by three artists from Barrow and Dalton.

The exhibition will comprise media ranging from illustrated prints, sculpture and photography and will communicate the subjects of their work as individual artists.

Charlotte CurtisBea Kilduff and theboymelancholy have been working on curating the exhibition for over a month but each project was developed individually.

"I organised the exhibition because I feel like there isn't really much of a platform for art that doesn't fit the regional mould", said the 32-year-old artist theboymelancholy.

"I asked Bea to be involved as I love working with her - we did an exhibition together about three years ago called Iron/Slate/Steel - and Bea asked me if Charlotte could get involved and I was like 'Yeah, awesome. More the merrier.'"

25-year-old Charlotte Curtis said: "We wanted to contribute to the local art scene. We came up with the title 'People like us' as the majority of our work focuses on different characters and portraits we use to express different themes in our art styles."

"We wanted to create an exhibition where we could display our work unapologetically", said the 26-year-old Bea Kilduff.

Rob Dunphy, of BUMS, said he was 'proud' to have been asked by these 'talented' local artists to use the venue.

He said: "Watching them create their own exhibition on their terms is inspiring. It is great that they feel our unique venue is the perfect space for them to display their works."

"I would recommend anyone with interest in art to come down and see the amazing work on display. You may even feel the need to buy and take a piece home with you.

The venue will have hot and cold drinks along with some cakes on sale.

The artists will be accepting donations and offer for their work, with all money raised supporting these artists directly.

The exhibition will open on December 27 from 6pm to 11pm and on December 28 from 2pm to 9pm.

Entry is free.
