AN amateur football club from Barrow is only four rounds from Wembley after making history on Saturday afternoon.

Holker Old Boys, who play in the North West Counties League Division One, reached the fourth round of the FA Vase for the first time in their history, after beating Premier League outfit Squires Gate 4-2 at their Rakesmoor Lane home.

The fourth round is the final regional round before the tournament becomes national, and Holker Old Boys have been handed an away draw at the famous Bury AFC, fan-owned since 2019, who also play in the division above Holker.

BBC Radio Cumbria's Adam Johnson covered the history-making game and conducted a post-match interview with Holker Old Boys boss Kevin Watkin, who described it as his side's 'most complete performance of the season.'

Holker, who currently sit sixth in Division One, went ahead through a stunning 20-yard free kick from winger Will McGladdery, before Jamie Hodgson tried to better his team-mate with a 20-yard curling drive.

A Jason Walker goal sealed a breathless first-half from the Barrow side as they went in at the break 3-1 up.

Squires Gate missed a host of chances to claw their way back into the game, but Holker hung on, and sucker-punched their opponents 16 minutes into the second half through a cool Tom Dawson finish to make it 4-1.

The away side pulled one back with a penalty with minutes to go and threw everything at Holker, who stood firm to claim a famous win.

Speaking to Johnson, Watkin said: "It's massive for the group, it's massive for the club, and part of the motivation of today was to go and be that part of the club's history, make your moment for you as a group, and be here in 25 years and remember that this is where we got to."

Asked if he was dreaming of Wembley yet, Watkin said: "It'd be great but there's a long way to go.

"It'd be a great story but it's a great achievement to get where we are now.

"Everyone wants a dream so we'll continue it as long as we possibly can."

Holker Old Boys will travel to Bury AFC on January 14.
