I'm A Celeb presenters Ant and Dec have launched a new experiment involving Matt Hancock and a Lettuce.

The ITV show hosts unveiled the vegetable, named Spud, on Monday's programme as they asked what would last longer - the lettuce or Matt Hancock as camp leader.

The lettuce experiment is inspired by Daily Star's hilarious live feed last month where the news outlet tested whether the 60p vegetable would outlast then-Prime Minister Liz Truss.

Ant and Dec launch Matt Hancock vs the Lettuce on I'm A Celeb

Just six weeks into the role, Liz Truss resigned from the top job as the lettuce celebrated with some disco lights and a treat from Greggs.

On Monday's show, Dec said: “Talking of Matt the leader, how long is he going to last as leader?”

Ant replied: “Well, more importantly, will he outlast the lettuce?

“You remember? We’re running an experiment to see what lasts longer, Matt Hancock’s leadership or this lettuce.”

Speaking about the lettuce which had eyes and a mouth stuck on to it, Ant continued: “He’s still looking good, a little bit brown there but still looking good.

“We’ll keep you and all the global news outlets updated in the Hancock versus Spud the lettuce experiment.”

The gag came after Matt Hancock was announced as camp leader, alongside Loose Women panellist Charlene White as his deputy.

The pair previously clashed over his breaking of Covid-19 guidance during the pandemic.

Following the announcement, dissent began to spread in the camp.

As he addressed the group for the first time, England footballer Jill Scott quipped: “Just to be clear, are these guidelines or rules?” as she referred to his affair which broke Covid social distancing rules in June 2021.

Afterwards, in the Bush Telegraph, Chris Moyles added: “Matt Hancock is our leader. Words nobody in Britain ever thought they would hear.”

Coronation Street actor Sue Cleaver joked about them leading a revolution and Boy George quickly came up with a song about never supporting a Tory.

ITV viewers rushed to social media to share their thoughts on Matt Hancock vs the Lettuce.

One fan wrote: "Hancock vs Spud The Lettuce oh @antanddec where do you come up with these."

Another user added: "Crying they’ve stuck a face on the lettuce"

A third person posted: "The lettuce giving us more personality than Matt Hancock."
