Barrow agrees that local man "deserves recognition"
There will be a Charity night to raise money for The Stroke Association in memory of Stuart Metcalfe, a Barrow AFC supporter, dedicated postman and much-loved dad.
His daughter Laura Anne Creighton said: “Our father sadly passed away due to a rare type of ischaemic stroke which accounts for only one per cent of all strokes.
“I was contacted, generously, by James Dowds who suggested we do a charity night in honour of our father and the money raised would go to his daughters as a gesture of good will.
“However, my sister and I felt that the money raised should go to a cause close to our hearts which could help future research and support for families who have been detrimentally affected by this devastating life-changing event.”
From the comments on the story, it is immediately recognisable how well liked and how missed Stuart Metcalfe is, many said he was a “lovely” man who “always smiled”.
While his daughters have decided to make their dad’s legacy a local event for a great cause, some people feel that there should be a physical reminder of “Meddy”.
One reader said: “As a friend of Stuart’s we should never forget him and remember him in every way we can, a true gent with a heart of gold, I miss him but will never forget him.”
Others voiced that they thought there ought to be a more permanent reminder of Stuart, saying: “There’s always new buildings being built around this town. The perfect accolade for a well loved and happy-go-lucky lad should be in my opinion ‘NAME A STREET’ after the gent. The years of service to the Royal Mail and walking the streets delivering your post for many years deserves recognition.”
Another person said: “Council are refusing to allow us to have the bench on the street. Absolutely disgraceful way of behaving towards such a fantastic man’s memory.”
Several people agreed, saying: ”It's a shame we can't have the bench in memory of him for the girls put around his home street.”
