A  HOUSING scheme providing extra personal care in Barrow has been rated good in a Care Quality Commission (CQC) inspection.

Creative Support - Station View on Holker Street was inspected on September 22 2022 for the first time by the CQC and received the rating in all aspects of the assessment.

The service provides home care for 30 people with physical and mental health disabilities, sensory impairment, people with learning disabilities, dementia, and the elderly.

The assessment was carried out by two inspectors who spoke to a range of staff, care receivers, and relatives, as well as an inspection of the provider's administration and management.

The service was considered safe with staff deemed sufficiently trained in handling medicines and providing the appropriate care.

The report said: "People told us they felt safe with the staff who visited their homes. 

"One person said: 'I know all the staff and feel safe with them.'

Another person said: 'I feel safe because the carers come in and see if I'm alright'."

Creative Support was also deemed effective by the report, which said: "People received the support they needed to eat and drink. 

"Staff supported people, as they needed, with making meals and drinks.

"One person told us, 'I usually do my own snacks and drinks, but if I am unwell the staff will always make me something, they ask what I want'."

The report said the service was caring.

"Relatives told us the staff were caring and helpful," it said.

"One relative said: 'They [staff] are really good with him.

"I like that they treat him as if he was their grandad. They know him really well.'

"Staff respected people's privacy and dignity and promoted their independence.

"People told us the staff were 'friendly but respectful'."

The service was also praised for providing personalised care, and for organising social activities for residents.

"The housing provider had arranged a variety of activities including visits to local attractions," it said.

"During periods of national restrictions the registered manager and housing provider had arranged activities which people could join while staying in their flats. 

"These had included 'window bingo' and quizzes via the internal intercom system."
