BARROW does not need a Starbucks, readers have said.

The coffee giant has put forward plans to open a drive-the car park of Asda in Walney Road.

Readers on social media suggested the town would benefit more from other shops.

Lynne Axford said: "Don't need anymore of them, [it's] clothes shops we need."

Allan Griffiths said: "We need clothes shops. And all different shops we can have a look around.

"It's a shame Barrow looks bad, how are you supposed to get people to come to this town when there is nothing here to look at."

Lee Morton said: "Oh great another coffee shop."

Graham Berris said: "With all the café, coffee shops. restaurants and places to eat is this the best they can do to bring new shops and firms into the town?"

Susan Royle said: "I like Starbucks but doubt this town needs another coffee shop."

Ange O'Halloran said: "Starbucks tastes vile. I'll stick to Costa thanks."

Julie Barrow said: "I just don't understand why people need to constantly have takeaway coffee on the go.

"Make it at home in a reusable cup. You'll get at least six coffees for the price of one bought one."

Helen Devereux said: "Well since we can keep three Costas running in Barrow then I am sure there is room for a Starbucks too."

A planning statement has been submitted by RPS Group in support of the application.

It says 'up to' 20 new jobs – with 13 of these being full-time-equivalent positions – would be created by the new drive-thru.

The branch, which would have a seating area, would be situated on the eastern side of the car park, close to the vehicular access from Holker Street.

The planning statement says the proposed development would share parking spaces with Asda.

The drive-thru would result in a net loss of 67 parking bays, reducing provision to 434 spaces.

The drive-thru is anticipated to use a maximum of 13 parking spaces which, when looked at alongside the results of a drone parking survey to determine maximum car park occupancy, leaves a 'surplus' of 159 bays.

Last month, a drive-thru Starbucks at Ulverston's Beehive Business Park was given approval by South Lakeland District Council.
