ON A Friday night, we asked readers where they used to enjoy going out at the end of the week.

Many responded with bars and clubs, some of which have long disappeared from Barrow's night economy, but the memories of visiting them on a Friday night still remain.

Martin Millar said that his night out began at: "The Grain and Grape then across the road to Scorpio." This route was a classic in Barrow back in the 1980s, because of how close the pub was to the pub. Joe Sides also enjoyed going to the Grain and Grape.

Emma Rose also mentioned Scorpio, along with: "Travellers, Yates, Kavannas, Osullys."

The Grain and Grape pub was the first in the town to install closed-circuit television, and Scorpio One club installed one shortly after.

Grain and Grapes manager John Raisbeck said: “There are two monitors, one of which is in my office, and eight cameras.

"While I can see the whole pub, the monitor which customers can see above the lounge bar only covers the wine bar and the cellar bar.

"Closed-circuit TV is obviously a security measure because of the size of the pub but customers will also be able to see who is in the other bars.”

Katherine Herbert said that she would go for a: "Cheeky drink in the majestic then pop over the kings for a quickie then straight to the cry! A few hours later head into the highlander."

The Cry Bar on Cornwallis Street went on the market as a property last year, the licenced premises being sold in 2018. Pictures inside the bar from 2021 show it 'stripped back to near shell condition' with little to indicate that it was once a bustling bar. Barrow Council become concerned about the effect of the buildings' condition on the wider area.

Earlier this month, The Cry and Kavanna's found a buyer according to property agents Corrie and Co. The clubs were sold subject to contract. They were both listed for sale for £200,000.

Other regular haunts included: "Abbey Road Cons, round the pubs then Whispers," according to Linda Laing.
