THE 'finest house in South Lakeland' has shared a touching tribute to the Queen alongside a photograph of when she privately visited the attraction.

Holker Hall and Gardens were visited by the Queen in 2013 on a 'private' visit where she shared 'curiosity, warmth and humour'.

A spokesman for the organisation shared the story on social media. It read: "As the nation celebrates the life of Her Majesty, expressions of affection have poured in from around the world.

"It is hard to imagine more fitting tributes, to a life committed to duty and service. As she strove to unite people during her long reign, it is comforting to feel we are now united in our abiding gratitude for her life.

"We had the honour of meeting Her Majesty during a private visit to Holker in 2013. Her warmth and humour were ever-present and her curiosity was genuine. Most touching, however, was the trouble and care she took with everyone she met. As it is often said, service seemed to be at the heart of everything she did."
