FLIES in the kitchen, food encrusted surfaces and dripping grease have been named as reasons why a takeaway was handed the lowest possible food hygiene rating.

Wrapport in Barrow has been told to make urgent improvements after receiving a hygiene rating of zero following a recent inspection.

Barrow Council inspectors have listed a catalogue of hygiene failures at the Cavendish Street eaterie, which sells wraps, burgers and other cuisines.

A damning inspection report seen by The Mail listed nearly 40 urgent food safety improvements that need to be made by Wrapport bosses.

Inspectors said flies may have been attracted into the kitchen by food debris and residue found on 'all surfaces', including the floor.

And several appliances, including a waffle maker, meat slicer, probe thermometer, ovens and a blender were encrusted with food.

The report also found the fridge was at a temperature 'likely' to cause the growth of poisonous bacteria and toxins.

There was also no soap at basins for hand washing, which were also encrusted with food.

The inspection was prompted by a complaint of grease dripping from an extractor vent.

Barrow Council is said to be working with Wrapport to ensure the improvements are made.

Councillor Tony Callister, Barrow Borough Council's spokesperson for licensing and public protection, said: "Businesses that handle food are routinely inspected under the Food Law Code of Practice to ensure they comply with the latest regulations which ensure that they operate in a hygienic manner.

"They are awarded a rating under the Food Standards Agencies National Food Hygiene Rating Scheme.

"Wrapport on Cavendish Street in Barrow was inspected on June 17 2022 and on this occasion our council officers judged the site to have a zero star food hygiene rating.

"This means that urgent improvement is necessary.

"Officers are currently working with the food business operator to ensure the required improvements are being made."
