A FREIGHT train coming into Roose station at 1.50 am on Friday morning was spotted with sparks flying out from the undercarriage.

A reader submitted photos of the train coming into the station 'with what looks like ceases on brakes on some carriages causing huge sparks and streaks of flames along the undercarriage and tracks.'

They also said that the 'rear high beams lights on the train were on to check that fire hasn't taken in bushes or sidings.'

Network Rail was contacted but had no incident logged at this time. It is unclear which freight service operator it was.

The train might have been a rail grinder, which is a process that helps prevent deformation of the line due to use and friction on the rail tracks.

The Furness line is used predominantly as a passenger line by Northern, serving Grange, Ulverston, Barrow and Millom from Lancaster.
