THE Barrow MP has joined forces with the community to clean up the backstreets and transform them into safe community spaces.

Simon Fell, MP for Barrow and Furness, has been out and about tidying the backstreets of Smeaton and Rawlinson Street in Barrow as part of the All Together Alleys Project.

The project sees constituents nominate their grotty backstreets/alleys to be cleaned up by the community.

The MP – alongside volunteers - helped collect litter, reported fly-tipping and submitted a request for re-tarmacking and getting the drains sorted.

Mr Fell said he was ‘really proud’ of how the project is developing with more plans in place to clean up Smeaton and Rawlinson Street.

He said: “I’m really proud of how this project is developing – we’ve had so much support from the local residents, businesses and charities, and donations of supplies (both food and drink for our action days, and supplies to paint walls).

“We’ve also worked with the Council and FCC to remove fly-tipping, tackle blocked drains and get the road re-surfaced.

“We’ve now done two action days with more to follow and the plan is that we leave Smeaton and Rawlinson Streets in a place where residents have a safe and place to gather, and are in a position to maintain it going forward.

“Once we get there, I hope we can pick up this model and apply it elsewhere in Barrow & Furness, re-taking our backstreets and giving them back to the community.

“Huge thanks to everyone who came out to help on a deceptively warm day, and also to Paul from Travis Perkins and Vicky from JT Atkinsons for supporting the project with paint and supplies.

“We’ll be back again soon.”
