A SERIOUS medical emergency forced the interruption of a DJ bingo event after a man collapsed.

North West Ambulance service received a 999 call on Saturday evening after a man collapsed at an Apollo Bingo event in Barrow.

DJ Andy Whitby was performing on stage at the time when a man appeared unresponsive after collapsing.

A member of the security team with first aid experience reportedly began performing CPR on the gentleman while paramedics made their way to the bingo hall.

Stuart Booth, head of Events for Majestic Bingo Ltd, said: “A gentleman passed out towards the end of the night.

“A security person with first aid experience helped the gentleman who at first appeared unresponsive but quickly came round.

“An ambulance was called and paramedics attended.

“Having checked him over the gentleman didn’t require taking to hospital and walked away from the club under his own steam.”

Mr Booth said he believed a security person began performing CPR on the gentleman but stopped quickly after realising the man was responsive.

“The paramedics arrived quickly and checked him over and were happy he was okay,” he said.

“I’m not an expert but he may just have fainted. There was some obvious concern to start with but it became clear that the chap was okay. He asked for a bottle of water which we gave him and walked home.

“We are just pleased he was okay and he even said he had had a great night before going.”

In a post published online, a spokesman for Apollo Bingo praised the ‘amazing paramedics’ for their response to the incident.

A spokesman said: “Thanks to everyone that attended our event [on Saturday].

“We apologise for the slightly shortened show but due to a medical incident it was deemed that the correct thing to do was cut the show at that time.

“We would like to take this opportunity to let you know that the customer received medical attention from our local amazing paramedics and walked away full of beans having enjoyed his night. Andy Whitby sends his thanks for your attendance and apologises that his set was shortened by 10 minutes and we will try to get him back in the near future.”
