THE YEAR SIXES at Vickerstown Primary School waved goodbye from an open-top historic bus.

People all over Walney and Barrow could hear the delighted children screaming and shouting from the bus as it made its way around the island and the peninsula.

This has become a tradition for the Vickerstown Primary School leavers at the end of the school year, but to keep it interesting the children do not know what day they will be riding the bus, nor where they will be going for lunch.

Russ Brown, the deputy head of the school said: "We tour around Barrow and Walney on the bus. This year we came back to the school and the Old Smithy fish and chip van was waiting. We are very proud of our year sixes.

"The kids love it, especially as the parents give them all balloons and party poppers and go around the town making a noise. It gives them a chance to see the town from a different perspective."

The bus and the food are funded by the Friends of Vickerstown Primary School.

The bus is a 1959 Bristol Lodekka named Harvey, which is owned by Cumbria Classic Coaches.
