A TIME capsule featuring old school items has been stowed away.

Children from a Year six Barrow primary school paid a visit to Barrow Archive Centre recently to deposit their 2022 Time Capsule.

While collating material for the 50th birthday open day, students and teaching assistant Sue Fryer from Dane Ghyll Community Primary school and nursery came up with the idea of storing a time capsule at the local archives instead of burying it. This means that future generations of teachers and pupils can easily access the materials in years to come.

Mrs Fryer helped the children to compile the contents of the box which included their interviews with staff, Maths and English test papers and the playscripts from Year two and Year six performances.

“We thought the children of the future would like to perform the same plays from 2022, and that they could be challenged with the same academic tests,” said Mrs Fryer.

Barrow archivist Susan Benson gave the children a guided tour behind the scenes to show them where the time capsule will be stored and had prepared local historical items for them to view.

These included the Ulverston Market Charter from 1280, a George Romney sketchbook, an Elizabeth I seal and an old map of the local area.

Although the time capsule will only be accessible to the school, Mrs Fryer has been preparing school memorabilia to deposit at the Barrow Archive Centre for the public to access, within the bounds of the Data Protection Act.

“The oldest items include a cricket score book from 1972, and a 1978 sports day programme, both these have children’s names in them. The cricket score book has a nice connection with former pupil, England cricketer, Liam Livingstone as his father Steve appears on the very first pages as a Dane Ghyll School player," she said.

If you are clearing out the loft/garage or moving house consider donating your school memorabilia to Barrow Archive Centre. Prospectuses, governor reports, pantomime, sports day and music programmes, videos, photographs (named and dated) etc could all be of interest and add to the history of the school.
