THE last vaccine clinic has been held at a Barrow surgery following nearly 13,000 volunteer hours put towards helping people get Covid jabs.

The Rotary Clubs of Furnes, Furness Peninsula and Barrow, together with 120 volunteers, have been helping to organise and steward the Covid vaccination programme at the Alfred Barrow Medical Centre since December 2020.

As rotary coordinator, Peter Garwood drew up the rotas for each vaccination session and over the whole programme produced over 364 rotas.

Turning up all weathers, volunteers helped by sanitising seats, handing out masks, manning the car park and directing people to the right place.

According to the Rotary clubs, there have been 160 clinics and 98,250 jabs carried out.

There has been a total of 12,900 hours volunteered, including 1,200 by Mr Garwood.

He said: “I have really enjoyed organising the rotas and the volunteers and I appreciate the awards that I had for my work but they were really meant for the whole team."

Some £600 was also collected for Children in Need and the Ukraine Appeal.

The Rotary Club of Furness has contact with a Club in Warsaw, Poland which is coordinating the supply of medical items to Ukraine and the money collected has been sent to them.

The last clinic for administering Covid jabs was held in June.

The Rotary Clubs and the volunteers are thanking businesses that have provided food for the volunteers.

People in Barrow have also been praised for donating tins of biscuits, chocolates and cakes.

According to official data, more than 144,000 Covid jabs have been administered in the Barrow borough.

At least 19 vaccines were administered in Barrow in June.

March 27 2021 was the busiest day for Covid jabs in the area.

Some 2,159 received the vaccine on that day.

In Barrow, 85 per cent of eligible people have had the first dose of the vaccine.
