AS part of a wide programme of celebrations to celebrate a century and a half of the sport, Furness golfers have emerged victorious in a wide field representing Cumbrian clubs.

Last weekend saw Furness Golf Club, on Walney Island, host the 2022 Cumbria County Strokeplay Championship with more than 60 participants.

In total 63 players from across the county competed in severe weather conditions for the coveted Tufty Blair Nett Trophy and the prestigious County Strokeplay Salver.

The competition, normally played over two days with four rounds of 18 holes, had to be curtailed to three rounds after play was suspended for an hour due to high winds around Sunday lunchtime.

The winds, gusting to 40-50 mph, were causing the players' golf balls to move on the green making fair gameplay impossible.  However, play resumed at 3.00pm when the winds had abated, testament to the commitment of all who completed the three rounds.

Overall, the Nett trophy was won by Tom Harris of Furness GC with nett scores of 73, 65 & 80 off seven handicap whilst Robbie Spence, also of Furness GC became County Strokeplay Champion and lifted the County Strokeplay Salver with fantastic gross scores of 69, 64 & 73, narrowly missing the course amateur record of 63.

The course rating is 70.9 with a slope of 127.

Furness Golf Club has been hosting many competitions this year as part of the clubs 150th anniversary celebrations.

Upcoming is the ladies open 'Team of 3' on July 20 and Seniors 55+ Open on July 14, for which the club is still taking bookings.

The England Golf 'English Boys’ County Finals' national competition will take place fromAugust 23-25, when spectators will be welcomed.
