RESIDENTS across South Cumbria faced another day without broadband as the outage continues.

Barrow and Furness MP Simon Fell said he has 'urgently' picked up the issue with Openreach.

Broadband providers including Sky, Talk Talk, BT and EE have told users that they are 'aware' that people are being affected by 'an incident in your local area'.

While some residents have had their broadband signal returned, many residents have suffered from issues since Monday evening.

"This outage is simply not acceptable," he said. "This isn’t just affecting residents who are trying to stream shows on Netflix, but local businesses, schools, service providers and the NHS too.

"In many rural areas, people rely on broadband to supplement their phone signals so there is a very real safety angle to this too.

"I’ve urgently picked this issue up with Openreach to get to the bottom of what is causing it, how many people are affected, what timeframe the outage will be fixed in, and how residents can go about claiming compensation.

"If needs be, I will escalate to Ministers to apply additional pressure. As soon as I get solid information, I will share this with constituents."

Mr Fell has written to the chief executive officer of BT, Clive Selley CBE.

Mr Fell said: "You will doubtless be aware that Barrow and Furness is currently experiencing a broadband outage across the constituency.

"The outage began in the early hours of Tuesday morning, and many constituents have experienced no improvement since this point.

"With this in mind, and given the urgent requirement for broadband in my local area, I would like to ask for answers to the following questions at your convenience."

David Fellows, from Ulverston, has been without broadband since early Tuesday morning.

He said he first noticed the issue when traveling down to Ulverston train station and said the situation was a 'feeling of chaos'.

Mr Fellows said: "We thought it would come back on. The big surprise was when we went down to the station, not only was the ticket room not working, neither was its machine and all the information boards."

Mr Fellows said he and his wife have not managed well as they use broadband a lot in their day-to-day life including contacting their granddaughters. He said he feels 'frustrated' with the situation.

Ulverston Mayor Bob Brown said: "Mine has only just come back on within the last hour or so after over 24 hours without it.

"It has caused havoc for many residents trying to work from home and many businesses in town with increased difficulty in running their businesses as well as the taking of card payments."
