A GROUP of travellers who have parked up at a new location following council action have been ordered to move once again.

Members of the travelling community were spotted setting up an encampment off Mill Lane in Walney yesterday.

It is believed it is the same group of travellers who previously resided in Biggar Bank before they were ordered to move by Barrow Borough Council.

According to the council, the travellers arrived on land just off Biggar Bank Road on Sunday, April 3.

Public Protection Officers from Barrow Borough Council visited the site earlier this month to carry out assessments.

The council announced last week that further legal action was being taken after the travellers refused to move off the site.

It is understood the same group of travellers have since parked their mobile homes in Mill Lane - prompting the council to take action.

A spokeswoman for Barrow Borough Council said the council believes the group of travellers are the same people who previously resided in Biggar Bank.

The council is aware of this and a notice for a 'Direction to Move' was served yesterday morning, a spokeswoman confirmed.

Des Barlow, Barrow Borough Councillor for North Walney, said a long-term solution needed to be found for the group of travellers who are moving ‘from pillar to post’.

He said: “I believe the matter is being looked into. The group has been moved from pillar to post over the past few weeks – they keep moving around.

“The solution should be a patch of land – a bit of green area allocated for them. If they have to leave then come back, that space would be there for them.

“I’ve been told that they have been knocking on doors, cold calling residents trying to get work which doesn’t help the situation.

“There should be a place for the group to live on and park their mobile homes.

“This has been going on for a while now. The group seems to be going to different places locally and there has to be a long-term solution to it or it’s going to keep happening.”
