A FOOTBALL ground could see hundreds more seats and improvements to its stands - if the club remains in the English Football League.

Cumbria County Councillor Mark Wilson was among a group of officials from across the county to take a tour around the Holker Street stadium in Barrow.

As the home of Barrow AFC, the ground has undergone a number of renovations in recent years including two new refurbished roofs in summer 2020.

Both the Ray Wilkie and Brian Arrowsmith Stands were refurbished and painted ahead of the start of the new season.

And now, the stadium could see more improvements to its site including up to 300 more seats, says Cllr Wilson.

Cllr Wilson embarked on a tour of the stadium on Thursday – and praised the progress the site had made in recent years.

He said: “The club have progressed well and been responsive to the demands put on them by EFL.

“It was very exciting to see all the improvements, the club has got some very good ideas for the future.

“They’ve done so much since I last visited the ground.

“We want them to stay in the EFL. They’ve got some good ideas for levelling out which include increasing their seating capacity and improving accessibility.

“They also told us about their strategy to safeguard children in all aspects of football.”

Cllr Wilson said hundreds of extra seats would mean better provision for both fans and staff members at the football ground.

He said: “We were told about hundreds more seats being put in the stand zone – which should happen as long as the team stays in the league.

“Extra seats will mean better provision for fans and staff members.

“We’ve also been told about plans to improve the away fans stand as well in the future.

“I am very pleased to see the progress made over the years.”

In summer 2020, Barrow AFC were promoted back in the English Football League after 48 years away.

The Bluebirds were promoted from the National League as champions after clubs in the division voted to decide the final league positions on a points per game basis.
