AN ART project helping raise awareness for five mental health and well-being charities has gone worldwide.

ArtWorks' latest project ‘What the flock’ brings together a team of eight volunteers working with five Furness charities to raise their profile.

Each charity get a big wired sheep and the small team of volunteers are getting everybody in the community and further a field to make pom poms to dress the sheep for a big event where the flock will come together on May 28.

One of the volunteers Sharon Tait said they have already received more than 10,000 pom poms - and more are still coming in.

She said: “We have big sheep to fill so it’s great to see everyone getting involved.

“We launched at the start of January and we did a big call out - the word just keeps getting spread.

“We’ve had pom poms from America, New Zealand, China, Hong Kong and Germany.

“We chose to create pom poms as anyone can make them, any age and any ability. They are especially great for people with Dementia and Alzhemiers because it takes them back to their childhood and it’s really cheap because all you really need is a bit of wool.”

The five chosen charities for this year's project are Youthability, Stitchability, Furness Pride, Furness Creative and space2create.

Sharon said her and the team tried to cover a range of charties and will be picking a different set after this project.

She said: “We have had other charities wanting to join which they can. Anyone who wants to join can feel free to but we can’t offer them the same support as the other five charities.

“We were lucky to receive support and money from Barra Culture for equipment which will be going to our five chosen charities first.

“We are just asking the community for any wool they can pass onto people but we do also provide packs we can send out to get people started.”

There are a variety of collection points in the area for people to drop off their pom poms including; The Wool Bar, Barrow Indoor Market, Dalton Leisure Centre, Ulverston Leisure Centre and many more.

Sharon and the team request all pom poms to be made and dropped off by April 14 so the team have time to get the sheep ready before the big event in May.
