TAKE a look inside the former shipyard medical centre on Barrow Island which has lay derelict for decades.

Photographs show how the old Vickers Medical Centre has fallen into disrepair after lying vacant for a number of years.

The site, based in Buccleuch Dock Road, is currently on the market for £400k, and includes four bedrooms and one bathroom, according to the property listing.

During its operation, the Vickers Medical Centre treated shipyard workers for minor injuries and provided a number of jobs for medical staff working at the site.

The building was also the base of the the former Sea Cadet centre which is now based at Dundee Street in Barrow.

The medical centre was reportedly emptied in 1992 and opened up again the late 1990s.

It was then reportedly sold to a developer, with plans to convert the building into accommodation.

The historic building is once again on the market for ambitious buyers looking to take on the dilapidated site.

According to the property listing on Farrell Heyworth, there are two large buildings currently on the site, the main one being the former medical centre as well as two large former houses within one large building.

The property listing states: "An exciting opportunity to purchase this 2.35 acre site located on Barrow Island. The site provides a great opportunity to purchase a large land plot which we believe would provide an ideal housing site adjoining a residential location with fantastic access to the nearby centre in Barrow and for employment.

"Currently on the site are two large buildings, the main building being the former shipyard medical centre and two large former houses within one large building.

"The site offers potential for development and we would advise that all prospective buyers enquire via Barrow Borough Council planning department as to the permitted development allowed."
