A DRINK driver collided with two parked cars when she attempted to make a short trip, a court heard.

A court heard how mum-of-two Sophie Nelson had tested three times the legal limit for alcohol after she collided with the vehicles near to where she lives.

Nelson, 35, of Barrow's Harrogate Street, admitted drink driving when she appeared at South Cumbria Magistrates' Court.

Prosecutor Lee Dacre said it happened on the street just before midnight on June 27.

She told police she was driving to a nearby cash machine.

Mr Dacre told the court: "At 11.41pm police received a call from a member of the public stating a female had collided with two parked vehicles, which caused damage.

"The defendant confirmed she had drunk a bottle of wine.

"She cooperated with providing a breath sample in the custody suite.

"In interview she said she had a bottle of wine and was going to a cash machine round the corner."

Representing the defendant, Andy Gallagher said in mitigation: "This defendant accepts that she did make a stupid decision on this particular evening.

"The distance driven by her is probably about 100 yards.

"She lives on a steep hill and does have difficulty with parking.

"She collided with two parked cars."

He said the defendant had recorded a higher reading of alcohol in her breath than when she was driving because she had drank alcohol before being visited by the police.

He said Nelson being banned from driving would have a 'significant' impact on the lives of her two children.

Magistrates sentenced her to a curfew keeping her at home between 7pm and 7am for 10 weeks.

She was banned from driving for 24 months.

Nelson was also told to pay a £95 victim surcharge and costs of £85.
