A DRINK driver who crashed his car into a lamppost and drove off has been sentenced.

A court heard how Bradley Poddington failed to stop after an incident in Barrow town centre on New Year's Eve.

The 28-year-old admitted three driving offences when he appeared before South Cumbria Magistrates' Court.

Prosecutor Lee Dacre said the motorist was nearly twice the limit on December 31 when he was driving his Mercedes C-Class in Barrow.

He collided with a lamppost on Duke Street, causing damage and failed to stop after the accident.

Poddington, of Caffrey Court in Barrow, was also convicted of dangerous driving for the incident.

The court heard he provided a breath test that showed he had 69 micrograms of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath - over the legal limit of 35.

Admitting drink driving, driving dangerously and failing to stop after a collision, the defendant was sentenced to a community order.

He was told he must complete 240 hours of unpaid work over the next year.

He was also banned from holding a driving licence for 22 months.

On top of that he was told to pay a £95 victim surcharge and £85 in prosecution costs.
