FRIENDS and family of a dad-of-two had expressed concern about his level of drinking, an inquest heard.

Daniel Henderson, of Ramsden Street in Barrow, died after suffering a health condition due to a long-term drinking problem, Cockermouth Coroner Court was told.

The 43-year-old carer had jaundice and poor liver function, it was heard.

A police officer who attended the scene of his death on May 12 2021 said there was a text exchange between Mr Henderson and his girlfriend. She said: "You will drink yourself to death" to which he replied: "No I won't".

The extent of his drinking problem only became clear after his death when his mother found up to sixty wine bottles hidden in his room.

Angela Henderson said: "He was the father of two children.

"He had a good relationship with them until their mother moved away from Barrow to St Helens.

"Even when she moved back to the area he was not allowed to meet his children.

"Daniel really struggled with this and his drinking increased in relation to this.

"He was well liked by many different people.

"In his spare time he would spend time with his girlfriend Charlotte and listen to music. He loved the band Motorhead.

"I was concerned about his drinking because of his father's drinking problem.

"When we cleared out his room after his death, we found 50 to 60 wine bottles.

"He hid it (his drinking) well."

She said he had worked for many years as a carer and helped many people during that time.

Before finding him dead in his room, Angela Henderson had advised her son to get some rest at 7.30pm due to his mobility being impaired by his condition.

That was the last time she saw him alive.

Pathologist Dr Sarah Hauxwell said there was a 'significant level of alcohol in his system' - 190 milligrams per decilitre of blood.

She gave the cause of death as upper gastrointestinal haemorrhage with an added factor being acute alcohol consumption.

"I accept the cause of death given to me," coroner Mr Robert Cohen said concluding.

"There is no dispute of fact in what happened in this case.

"He was a man that had an alcohol addiction.

"He had a medical history of alcohol abuse. An ambulance was called after he was found deceased but they were unable to revive him.

"This was an alcohol related death."
