THE cost of mooring boats on Windermere is set to rise after proposed fee changes were given unanimous approval by a South Lakeland District Council (SLDC) committee.

The move has come in the wake of inflation and changes in demand as the council seeks to ensure it retains a balanced budget for the coming year.

Among the scheduled costing modifications are a two per cent rise in permanent moorings and a five per cent rise in holiday - covering April to October - moorings and berths.

At a meeting of SLDC's lake administration committee, Cllr John Holmes asked whether the rise in fees by an 'average of two per cent' was enough in light of UK inflation currently standing in the region of five per cent.

Frankie Flannigan, SLDC service delivery manager, said the council was 'comfortable' with the proposed pricing structure.

"I think we can ride the storm at the moment," he said.

Cllr Andrew Jarvis, the district council's finance and assets portfolio holder, said: "At present, it seems we have a balanced budget for next year, so there are no additional demands being made."

A final decision on the council's 2022/23 budget is to be made on February 22.
