A PROUD author will publish a trilogy of books based in Barrow.

Elizabeth Hughes, who was born in Barrow but now lives in Sowerby Bridge in West Yorkshire, will publish the first book of the Monday is Washing Day trilogy in April.

Ms Hughes said: “Barrow is still my home.

“Even though I left years ago, my friends and my heart are still there.”

Ms Hughes lost her mum at the beginning of 2018 to Alzheimers.

She said: “When we were little, she never really talked about her childhood, so when she was diagnosed with Alzheimers we wanted to find out as much as possible.”

Her chats with her mum and aunt led to her wanting to preserve the history she had learnt.

“When that generation is gone, there will be no-one is left to tell their stories.”

While the book is fiction, it is based on things which happened within the families they talked about; three generations of women beginning in 1903.

The family moved to Barrow from Hull when her great-grandfather got a job at the then Vickers Shipyard.

In the middle of last year, she started an online course called Write That Book, which motivated her until the end.

“The aim of the course is to get 1,000 people to publish 1,000 books within 1,000 days.

“It’s a three month course, but I immediately signed on again when it finished because it motivated me so well.”

The book will be launched at Barrow’s Dock Museum in April 9.
