A MAN who threatened to hit his cousin with a glass bottle has been jailed.

A court heard how Carl Ward had been drinking heavily when he raised the vodka bottle against his cousin Joshua Ward.

The victim was chased by the defendant and ran to Barrow's police station to report the threats.

The 29-year-old admitted assault when he was hauled before South Cumbria Magistrates' Court.

Prosecutor Lee Dacre said the incident happened in a house at Barrow's Wordsworth Street on January 11.

"Police received a report at the front counter saying he had run from his house after his cousin had threatened him with a bottle of vodka," he said.

"His cousin wanted him to go to the shop but he refused because he was taking medication while drinking.

"The victim also refused to text his mum to ask her to go.

"The defendant picked up an empty vodka bottle and said 'I'll hit you with this'.

"The defendant chased after him but fell over.

"The victim managed to get through the back door and lock it and run to the police station."

The court heard Ward and his cousin were both living at the house following the death of their grandmother, who owned the property.

Having been charged the defendant was prohibited from entering Wordsworth Street under bail conditions.

But he breached those conditions by returning to the house. His cousin alerted the police.

Mr Dacre said Ward had 45 previous convictions and a record of 76 offences, 10 of them for violence.

The prosecutor urged the court to impose a restraining order to ban the defendant from returning to the street.

Representing the defendant, Trystan Roberts said any such order would deprive Ward of being able to go to his 'safe place'.

Mr Roberts said Ward had a number of mental and emotional difficulties and was due to receive a fortnightly injection to treat psychosis the day after the incident.

"It will have had an effect," he told the court.

"It's a sad case for a vulnerable defendant."

Magistrates sentenced Ward to eight weeks in prison and banned him from entering Wordsworth Street under the terms of a restraining order.
