A 25-YEAR-OLD who had trouble with mental health issues took his own life, an inquest heard.

Darrian David Birkett was found dead at his home on Derry Street on April 18 after calls were made to police from his partner and friends, The Coroner's Court in Cockermouth was told.

The much-loved young man was having trouble in his relationship at the time and was concerned about not being able to see his soon-to-be born child, according to a statement from his father Stephen Birkett.

"When Katrina partner fell pregnant Darrian said the relationship was going downhill," he said.

"She had threatened not to let him see the baby when it was born."

Katrina Hughes confirmed the relationship trouble in her statement and explained there were no problems until they started to live together in Derry Street.

"When I was at work he came in and I said that I was not going to serve him and then he left - that is the last time I saw him alive," she said.

Ms Hughes said after not hearing from him for a long time after he had sent her numerous text messages she messaged David Davis - Darrian's friend - to see if he had heard from him. When he said he hadn't they went to his address where they discovered his body through the letterbox.

Statements from police officers highlighted an interview with a neighbour who had spoken to Mr Birkett shortly before his death and said he had cut marks on his arm and offered to get him help - which he refused.

The neighbour said he told him he did not like taking his ADHD medication due to the effect it had on him.

Mr Birkett was also diagnosed with Asperger’s and his parents believed he had a depressive disorder as well.

Pathologist Dr Sissons gave the cause of death as hanging but did not believe cannabis in his system impacted on the decision to take his own life.

Summarising, coroner Mr Craig Smith took into account he was worried about if he would be able to see his baby, the cuts on his arm shown to the neighbour, and a Snapchat message he sent to his neighbour saying: 'Nice to know you'.

"This is a death by suicide," the coroner said concluding.
