A walker discovered a bizarre creature on Walney this week.

Lynn Murdoc captured a video of the strange looking creature which Cumbria Wildlife Trust confirmed was a highland dancer – a type of sea slug.

In the video the animal can be seen rocking side to side as it makes its way through the shallow waters near Walney beach.

A Cumbria Wildlife Trust spokesman said: “If we said we knew of a creature that swims upside down and tries to highland fling itself through the sea using its flapping kilt... you'd think we'd gone bananas.

“But it's true – this is the highland dancer (pleurobranchus membranous), a type of sea slug.

“They send a wave through their 'foot' – not quite a kilt – to propel themselves along in this rather ungainly gait.

"This one was spotted at Walney Island.”

Cumbria Wildlife Trust said an interesting fact about the highland dancer is that its spawn resembles ‘fleshy, translucent roses’ and form in long coils containing up to a million eggs.
