AN AMATEUR theatre group is celebrating after a successful show week.

Walney Musical Theatre Company have entertained audiences from Tuesday night to Saturday night at The Forum, Barrow, with their rendition of Kinky Boots.

Kinky Boots follows the story of a drag queen who comes to the rescue of a man who, after inheriting his father's shoe factory, needs to diversify his product if he wants to keep the business afloat.

Chairman and director of the theatre group, John Edwards, said: "It’s been an absolute joy for all of us to be back on stage, particularly with this show - it’s a real tonic - a feel good, uplifting story about acceptance and a really fun musical score that we all needed after what’s been a difficult year or so.

"Kinky Boots has been one of our most successful productions ever - sometimes, with a production, everything just clicks - you can have the best costumes or script in the world but unless everything else compliments it, sometimes it doesn’t quite gel. This one has, from casting to our wonderful set and costumes, incredible live band and Forum technicians it’s been a really special week, one I’ll remember for a long time - it’s been our most professional looking production in years, I’m really proud of what we’ve all achieved."

Audiences flocked in to see the show, supporting the theatre group who have been left unable to perform in the coronavirus pandemic.

Mr Edwards said: "We had a slightly shorter rehearsal run this year, starting around August when restrictions were lifted and it’s been full steam ahead since! Anyone that’s seen this week will appreciate the complex choreography that’s taken us a lot of rehearsing to get right!

"Our audiences never let us down, they’ve supported us through 90 years and thankfully this year has been no exception; right the way through to sell out performances and standing ovations each night, it’s really been something special for us."

Plans are already in place for the next set of productions.

There will be a youth production of The Phantom of The Opera next June, Disney's The Little Mermaid next November, and Elf the Musical in November 2023.
