A group of cyclists helped raise cash in 1997 to send two Walney Scouts to Chile.

The 15 cyclists rode from Newbiggin, on the coast road, tracing the course of a local river, the Lune, to its outflow into Morecambe Bay at Glasson Dock.

The sponsored bike ride was one of several fundraising events to help two Walney Scouts take part in the 19th World Scout Jamboree.

Richard Morgan, 15, and Stuart Windle, 16, were both members of the Eighth Barrow St Mary’s, Walney, Scout Group.

They were planning to go to the jamboree, near Santiago, Chile, in January 1999.

Richard and Stuart would be among a group of six Scouts selected to represent Cumbria at the event.

They would be joining 24,000 other people from all over the world.

Also in 1997 Cub Scouts from the region gathered at Nelson Street Centre in Barrow to learn a variety of skills.

Activities for the youngsters included games and challenges aimed at promoting leadership skills.

In the same year Dalton Scouts and Guides were happily throwing their Evening Mails in the bin - the recycling bin, that is.

For the Evening Mail's press hall manager James Haney had seen an appeal from the 1st Duddon Scouts and Guides, who kept their minibus on the road through recycling papers.

They were having to work twice as hard as the window of the minibus had recently been smashed by vandals.

James said: "We decided to give them some papers to help them raise money.

"But unfortunately, we already have a contract with a recycling company, so this was just a one-off.

"But they seemed very pleased that we had helped them out."

Also in 1997 too many Cub Scoops didn't spoil the broth when Duddon and High Furness Scouts held their annual cookery competition.

Youngsters aged between eight and ten were given a budget of £5 to come up with a meal for two. Daniel and Michael won over the judges with their pork steaks, potatoes and broccoli followed by strawberry supreme.
