BOATS left abandoned on a beach - which could present a hazard to the public and environment - will be removed in the coming days.

Steps have been taken to remove the discarded boats left on the shoreline at Askam beach.

The boats have been abandoned on the shoreline for 'quite some time' - and may be hazardous to the public, says Barrow Borough Councillor Ben Shirley.

The Dalton north councillor has been working alongside Askam and Ireleth Parish Council and Barrow Borough Council to shift the boats which have been recovered to the highway.

He said: "The boats have been on the shoreline for quite some time now, and could present a hazard to the public and our environment.

"With that in mind, I have been working together with our excellent Parish Council to have the boats recovered from the beach, and taken away from the highway.

"This is so that they’re no longer an eyesore for residents of Marsh Street or elsewhere along the shore, and they will no longer present a risk to the public or our local environment.

“With thanks to everyone involved in this piece of work, especially Askam and Ireleth Parish Council, and Barrow Borough Council’s Streetcare Department.”

Cllr Shirley said the boats will be removed in the coming days - and praised the team work of fellow councils to get the job done.

Askam's shoreline was previously a target for fly-tippers two months ago after a silver Nissan Pixo was found dumped in Duddon Road in Askam.
