THE green light has been granted to turn a former port office into housing.

Plans have been unveiled to turn a dock manager's office at the port of Barrow into 12 flats.

A proposal was submitted to Barrow Council to ask whether approval is needed to change the use of the building from offices to apartments.

The council has said that prior approval is not needed.

The building stopped being used by Associated British Ports last year, according to documents submitted alongside the plans.

The office, in Ramsden Dock Road, was listed for auction for £150,000.

A statement submitted with the plans said: "The site was vacated in September 2020 having become surplus to requirements and as such has been offered to the market with a B1(a) Use.

"The proposed dwellings benefit from pedestrian access within the principal and rear elevations of the building off Ramsden Dock Road as pictured on site photos overleaf.

"The site is ideally located within a predominantly residential area and is located just 0.3 km from the Devonshire Bus Stop and 0.2 km from the Tea House Bus Stop respectively.

"The floorspace subject to this application was most recently occupied as office space and has been occupied for such purpose since the building was constructed."
