HUNDREDS of Covid booster vaccines were given to patients in Ulverston as part of the latest roll-out offering top-up jabs.

Ulverston Community Health centre began its Covid booster vaccination programme over the weekend, administering 750 vaccines to patients on one of the wettest days of the year.

Dr Gerry Murray, of Dr Murray and Partners in Ulverston Community Health Centre, praised the support of volunteers from Ulverston Resilience Group.

He said: "We started the Covid booster vaccinations at Ulverston Community Health centre, doing about 750 vaccines on one of our wettest days ever.

"Again with the support of this fabulous group of volunteers from Ulverston Resilience Group.

"The programme for us, however, has never really stopped as we have been vaccinating in schools, care homes and housebound patients in recent weeks. Covid seems to just keep on giving.

"However, I know that this seems to be the only way out of our present predicament, so we intend to carry on supporting the programme for as long as it is needed.

"We are planning weekly booster clinics for the moment. These are being offered to patients over 50, clinically vulnerable patients and health and social care workers and carers.

"You will be contacted when you are over 180 days since your second vaccine. We are at present only using Pfizer vaccine but may be using Moderna in due course.

"We are looking forward to getting through this current phase of the vaccination programme and working again with the Ulverston Resilience Group to continue to support the locality through this pandemic.

"Thank you all from Ulverston Resilience Group for the unstinting and cheerful support. I could tell that you were all continue to be cheerful behind those very damp masks. We really could not manage this without you all."

Booster vaccines were offered to people aged 50 and over, those in care homes, and frontline health and social care workers from mid-September.

The Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine will be used as the booster dose for around 30 million people, with experts saying it is safe to be given alongside the usual winter flu jab.
