PLANS to change the use of a Barrow building have been recommended for approval.

A proposal to use the former Engineers Club on Abbey Road to provide a number of self-storage units, submitted by applicant Mr D Clark, will go before the planning committee on October 26.

The site is the former Barrow Amalgamated Engineers Club, which was previously used as a Working Men's Club.

The frontage forms part of the Central Barrow Conservation Area.

The plans state that there will initially be 29 units created on the ground floor, with a second phase providing an estimated 54 units on the first floor.

There will also be minor external alterations to the rear, including a new pedestrian door, a roller shutter door and a window opening.

Plans state that drop off and collections will be managed so that only one customer at a time will visit the site.

It will be necessary to book a time and duration slot for visits.

Plans read: "The agent has also confirmed that they intend to apply to highways for a loading bay to be marked out on High Street. Time limited parking bays are also available adjacent to the site. Given that only one customer at a time will visit the site there should be minimal impact on traffic from the proposal."

In 2017 permission had been granted for 12 apartments, which has now lapsed.

This was due to be the third phase of development on the site following earlier phases which resulted in seven residential apartments on another part of the site.

The site is adjacent to the previously developed apartments and opposite a residential protection area.

The officers conclusion states: "Taking account of the proposed method of operation of the self storage units, the soundproofing in place already on site and the economic benefits in the development, the proposal is considered acceptable and should have minimal impact on residential amenity.

"The proposal is also welcomed in bringing a vacant building in the conservation area back into use."

The plans were recommended for approval, subject to conditions including that the site should only be open to the public between the hours of 8am and 6pm each day.
