COLLEAGUES of a well-respected porter who worked at Furness General Hospital for nearly 20 years have paid tribute to his life.

Stephen Tranter, who died suddenly on October 5 aged 57 years old, lived in Barrow, was a beloved fiancée of Emma, much-loved dad of Joshua, loving brother and brother-in-law of Paul and Derian, loved uncle and a great friend to many.

Mr Tranter worked as a porter at the A&E department at FGH for 19 years before his death.

His son Josh said the hospital held a 'special place' in his dad's heart - and wanted the funeral procession to drive past FGH in Dalton Lane so colleagues and friends could bid their farewells.

Crowds of mourners lined outside the hospital to pay their respects to Mr Tranter who considered FGH like his 'second home'.

In a tribute shared with staff across the trust, chief operating officer Kate Maynard said Mr Tranter always went 'over and above the expectations' in his role at the hospital.

She said: "Steve was a much loved and respected porter at FGH for almost 19 years. He predominantly worked in the Emergency Department and was very much part of their team, always going over and above the expectations, loved and respected by all.

"Steve also worked within the X-ray department for a number of years and as our FGH post man. He was well known throughout the hospital for his great personality, sense of humour, loyalty and dedication. He will be greatly missed by all."

A book of condolence and some 'memory cards' will be available in the FGH chapel where colleagues are invited to leave their memories of Mr Tranter.

Mr Tranter's son Josh described his dad as 'big-hearted' who had 'time for everyone' for met.

The 23-year-old shipyard worker said: "Dad was big-hearted and very kind and funny. He was a proper gent.

"I couldn't have asked for a better dad. He taught me everything I know.

"He'll leave a big hole in all the lives of people that knew him. Doctors were coming up to me at the funeral saying they don't know what they'll do without him.

"He was always the first one there who knew everything that was going on.

"He'll be very much missed."
