BARROW & District rugby league saw NCL Division Two side Barrow Island face NWML Division One Dalton in the Barton Townley Final.

The opening exchanges set the tone for the game as both sides were looking to dominate field position with both defences being tested.

This was competitive tough local rugby of a high standard as Barrow Island and Dalton tried to create gaps and punch holes in the oppositions defensive lines but both sides held firm.

In mid-way of the first half Barrow Island secured field position on the Dalton 20 metre line from a penalty and quick hands saw Islands winger Max Moore go over in the far corner to open the scoring. However, the conversion missed leaving it at 4 v 0.

Dalton responded and some neat play from Ryan Baines and Harry Gordon fed Harri Brown who nearly crashed over but Islands defence again held firm. From the play ball Dalton hooker Joe Crarey quick thinking saw him dart over to score.

The conversion missed leaving it all square 4 v 4. The game continued with the same high intensity as both sides defences dominating the play with Barrow Island forward Carl McBain and Dalton's Jordan Jones having fine games in the middle of the park, half time came with the score even at 4 all.

The second half continued in the same vein as both sides tried to break down the oppositions defence. As Barrow Island built up pressure and gaining field position a kick through from Max More was gathered by Jake Stockdale and he scored out wide, conversion missed, 8 v 4.

Dalton answered back with forwards Ioan Hayes and Brad Richards working hard but the defence of Barrow Island held firm. Just as Dalton seemed to be getting back into the game they were hit with a sucker punch as a neat chip over from Island scrum half Ian Irvine was gathered by Adam Jackson and he went over under the posts, Sam Jones converting to stretch the lead to 14 v 4.

Dalton responded and forced Barrow Island into drop outs but even with repeat sets Dalton could not break through the defensive line. With Adam Jackson's kicking game in fine form it wasn’t long before another kick through saw Jake Stockdale gather and he crossed for his second try out wide, conversion missed. 18 v 4.

Dalton responded but to no avail and Joe Spencley capped off a man of the match performance with a great pass to feed Ryan Clegg who went over by the posts, Max Moore converting to give a final score 24 v 4.

Both teams contributed to a great competitive game of rugby with Adam Jackson and Man of Match Joe Spencley best for Barrow Island with standout performers for Dalton Ryan Baines and Zak Steel.
