THE number of coronavirus cases in South Lakeland increased by 89 in the last 24 hours, official figures show.

A total of 9,691 people had been confirmed as testing positive for Covid-19 in South Lakeland when the UK coronavirus daily dashboard was updated on October 8 (Friday), up from 9,602 on Thursday.

The rate of infection in South Lakeland now stands at 9,238 cases per 100,000 people, far lower than the England average of 12,160.

Across the UK, the number of recorded cases increased by 34,910 over the period, to 8,081,300 – though no figures were included for Wales because of a technical issue.

However, there were no new coronavirus deaths recorded in the latest 24-hour period in South Lakeland.

The dashboard shows 227 people had died in the area by October 8 (Friday) – which was unchanged from Thursday.

It means there have been no deaths in the past week, which is the same as the previous week.

They were among 19,418 deaths recorded across the North West.

The figures include anyone who died within 28 days of a positive test result for Covid-19, and whose usual residence was in South Lakeland.
