A HISTORIC Barrow building has been put back on the market for £1 million.

The former Mail office in Abbey Road was sold last year, with plans to turn the building into upmarket apartments approved by Barrow Council.

But the building has now been placed on the market, according to an online listing.

Proposals to convert the building and its car park area into high-end housing were lodged by development company Abbey Road Regeneration Group.

It is understood the company has not ruled out developing the building itself but could sell it to another developer.

Estate agents Corrie and Co described the former offices as 'an imposing, period historic building, with a prominent central location'.

It has planning permission for 11 one and two bedroom flats and three workshop units .

It was previously listed on the market for £350,000 before being bought by the current owners.

The developers have also revealed plans for a second potential apartment building on the car park next door.

Developer David Clark said he hoped to build one of Barrow's 'iconic' buildings made up of 14 self-contained apartments.

The plans are currently at a 'concept' stage.

The building was described as: “A substantial two and part three storey office building originally dating from the late 19th century with excellent on-site parking provision.

“Internally, the accommodation comprises a mix of open plan and private office space, meeting rooms, stores and ancillary facilities on each floor."

Vanessa Sims, Regional Group Editor at Newsquest Cumbria, explained the sale of the building last year.

She said: “We made the decision to sell our former offices in Abbey Road as they were no longer suitable for our needs.

“The dedicated team of reporters at The Mail continue to be based within the Barrow community and are as committed as ever to bringing our loyal readers trusted news in print and online."
