‘Chris & Meg’s Wild Summer’is a six part series on BBC2 starting on Sunday, August 29

In one of the episodes TV naturalist, Chris Packham returns to Barrow with a tour of Piel Island by guide John Murphy, who regularly takes walkers to the beauty spot.

Always delighted to show guests the beauty of the island John said: “I do the guided tours across to Piel and lots of local guided walks around the area.

“I met Chris over South Walney when we did a programme about a birds life down on the nature reserve, 15 years ago.

“When he and Megan decided to do this particular programme the production team asked me if I was willing to walk Chris and Megan across to Piel and to do a slightly different slant.

“So instead of doing a show just about birds, instead it was about the open spaces and mental health benefits being out on the sands and walking this glorious island. Of course I said yes.”

John walked the whole production team slow and steadily across the island before visiting the famous Piel Island pub and discussing the history of the island and the mental health benefits of being outside.

John said: “We eventually got to the island, it was a slow and steady walk.

“We discussed many things about mental heath benefits of living in Barrow and how beautiful the town is and Chris already knew the town of course so he was quite receptive to it all so that was a great conversation.

“We then got on the island and I took them to the pub and had a long chat again mainly about the mental health benefits of appreciating the town where you live and getting out and about and exploring the places you life and work.

“A lot of discussion about the island itself was had, the castle, the history behind it which timed in with the history of the Furness Abbey. Generally, I had a fantastic day with them, they both went away with a big smile on their face.

“I’m now looking forward to seeing this opportunity of promoting our town and our history on national TV.”
