AN AMBLESIDE family has raised more than £12,000 for the hospice that cared for a loved one who died after a battle with cancer earlier this year.

Vernon Rigg and Laura Swainson walked 143 miles in memory of wife and mum Kathryn.

The pair were joined at different stages of the challenge, completed over ten days, by various members of the family.

Ms Swainson described being 'blown away' by the amount raised after a cheque for £12,174.48 was presented to Lancaster-based St John's Hospice.

“This money will enable the hospice to help so many people," she said.

“Thank you from the bottom of our hearts to everybody who donated to our walk in memory of our beautiful Kathryn."

Routes around Ambleside, at Arnside and over Loughrigg and Wansfell were among those tackled by Ms Swainson and Mr Rigg.

Donations are still welcome and can be made at tinyurl.com/pe29um32
