FURTHER plans to bring a major coffee and food chain to a town have been revealed.

Bosses from Canadian chain Tim Hortons have been tight-lipped on plans to open a branch in Barrow after previously submitting minor plans for a new branch.

But now the chain has submitted full and detailed proposals to council bosses to open in place of the existing Pizza Hut restaurant in Hollywood Retail Park.

Plans have been put forward to change the use of the Pizza Hut site from restaurant to a coffee shop selling food and drink with a drive thru lane.

In a statement submitted alongside the plans, a the company emphasised what set it apart from McDonald's, KFC and Burger, which all sit nearby.

"The Tim Hortons offer is different from that provided by the likes of McDonalds, KFC and Burger King and is comparable to that provided by coffee shop operators such as Costa or Starbucks, with a substantial part of the offer comprising hot and cold beverages and bakery goods, including an extensive choice of donuts.

"The hot food offer includes paninis and 'melts' as well as hot sandwiches and wraps, again similar to other coffee shop operators.

"There is also a greater emphasis on the ambiance of the restaurant facilities, encouraging customers to dine in."

The statement said the new branch would also bring employment opportunities.

"As this planning statement demonstrates, the proposed development is in accordance with the development plan and raises no issues or adverse impacts that would give a clear reason for refusal.

"On the contrary, the proposal will facilitate the re-occupation of a vacant unit and bring about much needed employment opportunities during the construction phase and upon occupation of the unit by Tim Hortons.

"It is therefore requested that the application be approved without delay."

According to the plans, work to install a drive-thru lane and make alterations to the site would take place if permission was granted.

Those visiting the drive-thru would be able to select their order and pay on a kiosk.

Plans say the number of parking spaces at the restaurant site would be reduced from 20 to 16.

The chain is known for its fresh coffee and baked goods including doughnuts and already has nearly 5,000 outlets worldwide across 14 countries.

The first UK Tim Hortons opened in 2017 and there are now 28 outlets with eight more 'coming soon', according to the company's website.
