READERS have given their opinion after EDL founder Tommy Robinson lost a High Court case brought by a Syrian schoolboy.

Tommy - whose real name is Stephen Yaxley-Lennon – was sued by Jamal Hijazi, who was assaulted in the playground at Almondbury Community School in Huddersfield in October 2018.

Shortly after the video of the incident went viral, Mr Robinson claimed in two Facebook videos that Jamal was “not innocent and he violently attacks young English girls in his school”.

At a four-day trial in April, Jamal’s lawyers said that Mr Robinson’s comments had “a devastating effect” on the schoolboy and his family who had come to the UK as refugees from Homs, Syria. In a judgment delivered on Thursday, Mr Justice Nicklin ruled in Jamal’s favour and granted him £100,000 in damages.

Mail readers have given their views of the case. Dominic Hartin said: "Good to hear, we're not in the 90's anymore - racism should not even be a topic of discussion except in history lessons."

Larry England said: "The 5ft 2 fraudster can add that to his other court outings, like when he admitted to being in contempt of court and breaching reporting restrictions."

Lucy Simmons said: "I don't get why everyone was nice to him when he came to Barrow."

Jon Williamson said: "100K in damages? And the rest."

Greg Rose said: "Great news but why only 100k? Should have been more."

Colin Harrington said: "Hopefully he'll have to pay the kids legal fees on top of that."
