South Cumbria Scout Association honoured outgoing divisional secretary Chris Pudsey with a certificate and a recognition of ten years' service in 1991.

And a medal of merit went to Julie Samson for her work as assistant divisional commissioner for leader training.

The awards were made at the divisional scout council annual meeting at Barrow Baptist Church hall by divisional commissioner Denis Stanwood.

In 1993 the lads of the 1st Duddon Beaver Colony were proud of their new smart banner.

The flag was dedicated at a St George's Day Church Parade by the Rev Stephen Skinner, Vicar of Dalton-in-Furness.

The banner was presented by Norweb to the new Colony after a series of safety briefings conducted by Celia Dixon, one of the safety representatives from Norweb's Barrow depot.

The briefings included quizzes on electrical safety in the home, a presentation of the video Play Safe and discussions centred around the video.

Tom Kelly, Norweb's Lakeland electricity distribution manager, and his wife Dorothy attended the ceremony with Graham Postlethwaite, Lakes South production manager.

In 1994 Cub Scout leader David Legg, of the 6th Duddon Methodist Scouts, won a day out with an AA patrolman in a national competition.

David, of Lord Street, Dalton, spent the day helping to start cars and do on-the-spot repairs with local patrolman Martyn King.

The 18-year-old Scout, who first joined the movement as a Beaver, was on an ITec course.

He said: "It was a spot the difference competition in our Scouting national magazine. The picture was of a car engine and we had to spot the difference between two pictures. The runner-up prize, which I won, was to spend a day with the AA patrol.

"I was with Martyn from 10am to about 6pm and it was brilliant."

In 1993 The Mail visited the 26th Barrow Extension Scouts to see members in action in the year the group celebrated its 25th birthday.
