MULTIPLE-AGENCIES were called to Walney Island last night after concerns for a person’s welfare.

Furness Coastguard was alerted at around 9pm and quickly headed out to the island to meet with the first informant at the Round House Hub & Café.

The officer in charge deployed two search teams to north and south from the last known position of the person.

The coastguard soon requested assistance from Millom Coastguard Rescue Team, and Duddon Inshore Rescue team was requested to launch its inshore lifeboat and deploy quad bikes.

Barrow Lifeboat team was also requested to launch its inshore lifeboat and all-weather lifeboat and Ulverston Inshore Rescue was also tasked to assist with quad bikes.

A Furness Coastguard spokesman said: “Coastguard search teams were deployed along the coast, both Barrow lifeboats started searching from south Walney heading north while Duddon Inshore Rescue started searching from north Walney heading south.”

Thankfully, two hours into the search, the teams were informed by Cumbria Police that the person had been found ‘safe and well’.

The spokesman added: “Another excellent example of multi-agency work ending in a positive outcome.

“The team would like to thank the first informant for noticing something was wrong and for reporting this allowing a swift deployment of resources.

“If in danger around the coast, or you think someone else is, dial 999 and ask for the coastguard.”
